American pikas are small, round-eared relatives of rabbits that call from boulder fields throughout the day. They don't hibernate. Instead, they spend summer caching dried vegetation under rocks to survive the winter, and researchers have tracked population declines at lower-elevation sites as warming temperatures compress the cold habitats they require.[7] White-tailed ptarmigan, the only bird that stays in the tundra year-round, blend almost perfectly into their surroundings in all seasons: brown and mottled in summer, nearly white in winter. They're easy to walk past without noticing. Elk move through the alpine zone during summer months, and Rocky Mountain National Park's herd is one of the largest in North America. Golden eagles and red-tailed hawks hunt the open tundra regularly.
