Palmer established the company in 1870, choosing narrow-gauge construction for practical reasons: cheaper building costs, tighter curves, and superior maneuverability through mountainous regions compared to standard-gauge alternatives. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad functioned as one of the primary economic engines driving development throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Mining represented the most lucrative traffic source during the railroad's early decades, with silver, copper, zinc, and other metals extracted from Colorado and Utah mines transported via D&RGW lines to smelters and processing facilities. Notable Operations and Legacy

The "Rio Grande Zephyr" made history. Introduced in 1949, this famous passenger train represented one of the most well-known streamliners operating west of Chicago, featuring streamlined silver cars, dining service, and overnight sleeping accommodations on the Denver-Salt Lake City route. Its operation continued until 1983, making it one of the longest-continuously operated streamliner services in American railroad history. The railroad's narrow-gauge operations continued on the Antonito-Chama line and the Silverton Branch long after standard-gauge railways had replaced narrow-gauge lines elsewhere, contributing significantly to the railroad's identity and attracting growing numbers of scenic and recreational passengers who valued the authentic narrow-gauge experience. The preservation of the Antonito-Chama line, now operated as the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, and the Silverton Branch, continuing as the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, perpetuated the legacy of D&RGW operations and maintained narrow-gauge tradition into the twenty-first century.

Final operations came in 1988. The remaining operations were transferred to regional carriers and short-line operators, but the company's historical significance as a pioneer of narrow-gauge mountain railroading secured its position as one of the most important and influential railroad systems in American history. Its role in opening the Rocky Mountain West to economic development and maintaining scenic passenger services into the modern era can't be overstated. The railroad's engineering accomplishments, particularly the construction of track through extraordinarily challenging alpine and canyon terrain, represented the peak of narrow-gauge railroad engineering technology.
