Table Mesa
Table Mesa is a residential neighborhood located in the southern portion of Boulder, Colorado, situated west of South Broadway Street on terrain that rises into the foothills characteristic of the Front Range. The neighborhood gained national attention in March 2021 following a mass shooting at a King Soopers grocery store on Table Mesa Drive, an event that became one of the deadliest incidents of gun violence in Colorado's history. Beyond that tragedy, Table Mesa has been reported to longtime Boulder residents as a mid-century planned subdivision that took shape in the early 1960s, offering a mix of hilly, scenic lots and proximity to the amenities of South Boulder.
History and Development
The origins of Table Mesa as a residential neighborhood are rooted in the postwar expansion of Boulder during the mid-twentieth century. The subdivision was established on approximately 555 acres of the Viele Ranch in 1962, carving a new community out of land that had previously served agricultural purposes.[1] The land west of South Broadway Street was characterized by hilly terrain that gave the area a scenic quality distinct from the flatter suburban tracts being developed elsewhere along Colorado's Front Range at the time.
Aerial photographs from the late 1950s and early 1960s document the early physical appearance of Table Mesa and its relationship to neighboring areas. One such image captures a view of Table Mesa with Dover Drive visible in the foreground and the Martin Acres neighborhood in the background, with South Broadway Street serving as a dividing line between the two housing areas.[2] This boundary remains a recognizable geographic feature of southern Boulder today, separating Table Mesa to the west from the older Martin Acres development to the east.
By the mid-1960s, the neighborhood had grown sufficiently to support local commercial activity. Community recollections place early retail establishments within the Table Mesa area before 1964, with residents noting the presence of large trees and small recreational features that gave the neighborhood a distinct character during its formative years.[3] Over the following decades, commercial development in and around the neighborhood expanded, eventually including the King Soopers grocery store on Table Mesa Drive that would become a central gathering place for residents of the broader South Boulder community.
Geography and Character
Table Mesa occupies a section of southern Boulder where the landscape begins to transition from the relatively flat plains of the Boulder Valley toward the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The hilly topography west of South Broadway, noted at the time of the subdivision's founding, contributed to the scenic character of the neighborhood and helped shape the style of residential architecture developed there.[4]
South Broadway Street functions as a significant corridor in this part of Boulder, connecting Table Mesa and surrounding neighborhoods to the broader city and serving as a commercial spine along which many of the area's retail establishments are clustered. Table Mesa Drive, a street running through the neighborhood, provides one of the primary internal connectors for the subdivision and is the address of several neighborhood landmarks, including the King Soopers store that has served residents for decades.
The neighborhood's mid-century origins are reflected in its residential architecture. Homes in Table Mesa include examples of the ranch and split-level styles that were prevalent in American suburban construction during the 1960s, and the area has drawn interest from those who study and document mid-century modern design in the Boulder region. The neighborhood's commercial node along South Broadway and Table Mesa Drive provided residents with everyday services, and community memory stretches back to the earliest days of the subdivision's development. Longtime residents have recalled the neighborhood's atmosphere in the 1960s and 1970s, noting the ways in which the built environment and local amenities shaped daily life in Table Mesa during those decades.[6]
2021 King Soopers Shooting
On March 22, 2021, a mass shooting occurred at the King Soopers grocery store located at 360 Table Mesa Drive in Boulder, resulting in the deaths of ten people, including a Boulder Police Department officer who had responded to the scene.[7] The event marked one of the deadliest mass shootings in Colorado since the 1999 Columbine High School attack and drew immediate national attention to the Table Mesa neighborhood and to Boulder more broadly.
According to a timeline of events reconstructed by news organizations, the shooting began at approximately 2:30 p.m., with witnesses reporting that a gunman opened fire inside the store.[8] Boulder police were called to the store at approximately 2:40 p.m. for a report of an active shooter, with witnesses providing emergency dispatchers with information about the situation as it unfolded.[9] A suspect was taken into custody following the incident.
Authorities did not immediately offer details regarding a motive for the attack.[10] The suspect was subsequently charged with ten counts of murder in connection with the shooting.[11]
The shooting occurred in the Table Mesa section of Boulder and became closely associated with the neighborhood in subsequent national and international news coverage.[12] The store on Table Mesa Drive had long been a familiar part of daily life for residents of the neighborhood and surrounding South Boulder communities, and the attack left a lasting mark on the area's collective memory. Following the shooting, the King Soopers location became a focus of community mourning, with memorials established near the site in the days and weeks that followed.
The event also reignited debates about gun control in Colorado and across the United States. Boulder had previously taken steps to regulate certain types of firearms within city limits, and the shooting at Table Mesa Drive brought those local policy efforts into sharp national focus.[13]

Table Mesa is situated in the southern portion of Boulder, accessible via South Broadway Street, which runs along the neighborhood's eastern edge and connects the area to central Boulder to the north and to the town of Louisville and other communities to the south. Table Mesa Drive serves as a primary east-west corridor within the neighborhood itself, providing access to residential streets and to the commercial establishments along the South Broadway corridor.
The neighborhood's position on the hillside west of South Broadway gives it views toward the Flatirons and the broader Boulder Mountain Parks system that borders the city on its western side. This geographic setting, combined with the neighborhood's mid-century character, continues to define Table Mesa's identity within Boulder.
